Due to a dated, undersized, and an inefficient configuration, Schurz Communications, Inc., WSBT-TV and Radio Operations required a new facility to meet their growing space needs. Schurz commissioned The Austin Company to provide master planning, site location, and design-build services for this new 84,000 SF facility. This facility includes a 4,800 SF television production studio and six radio stations. It was also designed using LEED guidelines and is capable of being LEED certified.
After using Austin Consulting, a division of The Austin Company, to assist them in identifying and evaluating properties, it was decided that the optimal site for the new facility would be in Mishawaka, IN. It was not the company's intention to move out of downtown South Bend, but there were no locations available in South Bend that could accommodate variables such as tower height, transmission tower line of sight, amount of land needed and overall design requirements.
After working closely with TV, radio and corproate representatives, Austin’s solution is a two-story building situated on a 10+ acre Greenfield, triangular-shaped site. The design features a brick and pre-cast façade and includes a glass atrium and water feature that blend into the landscape of the upscale corporate park. |
