Dayton Daily News

This building in the Beaux-Arts style has housed The Dayton Daily News since it was constructed in 1908 by the newspaper’s first publisher, James M. Cox. With its Corinthian columns and extensive terra cotta detailing, this national landmark bears a decided resemblance to Stanford White’s famed Knickerbocker Trust building in New York City.

Recognizing that the ravages of time and weather had taken their toll on the building, Dayton Newspapers Inc., commissioned The Austin Company to analyze its condition. At the same time, Austin was asked to prepare plans for restoration and future maintenance. Austin then provided services to renovate the exterior of the building, including rehabilitation of the windows, terra cotta surface and ornamental wood curtain wall. In a difficult program, these elements were restored to match their original appearance. Light globes on the façade and globed streetlights were installed to further evoke the building’s early 20th century ambiance.
