Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

After considering renovation alternatives for its location of 78 years, Wisconsin’s largest newspaper, the Journal Sentinel, decided to consolidate production into a new plant, which has reduced the company’s operating costs and increased production efficiency.

The Journal Sentinel’s new production plant contains three high-speed, high-volume Koenig & Bauer printing presses. The five-story presses are capable of churning out up to 85,000 copies per hour of a 64-page newspaper and have significantly increased quality, flexibility and productivity for the newspaper.

The facility’s design incorporates a number of “green” features, including the use of recycled raw materials; optimum insulation for roofing, walls and glass; wall and ceiling finishes that maximize light reflectivity; and energy-efficient HVAC and electrical components and systems.

The 350-foot-long press line uses shaftless technology with computers controlling synchronization. The improved control makes start-up easier, reduces waste and provides for a more efficient operation.
