Staten Island Advance

The SIA is one of New York’s oldest newspapers with a daily circulation of 75,000. The Advance purchased a new MAN Roland Geoman 70 press which produces better color and results in a higher print quality. To accommodate the new press, SIA called on Austin to add a new press hall to the facility and upgrade the mailroom to accommodate state-of-the-art technology.

The building is supported on 237 concrete-filled steel pipe piles, each weighing 1,700 pounds that were driven to an average of 42 feet below the ground surface. The 300-ton press required its own independent foundation system, a critical component of the project. To ensure that settlement was virtually zero, Austin designed a four-foot thick concrete mat — a base that would uniformly distribute the various concentrated loads from the press.
