Strategically located near major highways and railroads, The PD, Ohio's largest daily newspaper, chose to move its printing operations to a $200 million satellite production plant. The new complex includes a transportation center. Business-related functions, including editorial and advertising, remain at the newspaper's headquarters. There, the newspaper is paginated on computer terminals, then transmitted to the production center eight miles away by means of fiberoptic lines. This augments the PD’s already strong capability to publish late-breaking news and sports reports.
The newsprint warehouse has the capacity to store 5,400 rolls of newsprint, stacked six high. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) move the 2,850-pound rolls from the roll-preparation area to the presses. The 70-foot-high pressroom houses four Goss Colorliner presses. |
