Tinker Air Force Base Corrosion-Control Strip Facility

The Austin Company was contracted to design and build a $22-million corrosion-control strip facility for the U.S. Tinker Air Force Base. The facility consolidates operations previously spread across the base.

The Austin Company was contracted to design and build a $22-million corrosion-control strip facility for the U.S. Tinker Air Force Base. The facility consolidates operations previously spread across the base.

Tinker’s previous strip facility was not high enough to accommodate an E-3, requiring the Air Force to perform E-3 de-paint tasks in a separate building. This created inefficiencies, preventing the existing building from being exclusively utilized for painting. The new hangar has the flexibility to strip the E-3, B-1 and other aircraft, including C-135 and smaller planes.

The facility offers flexibility to use new, environmentally-friendly dry media stripping systems, as well as conventional chemical stripping systems. The dry media stripping system is the only approved technology to de-paint B-1 aircraft. It was not previously available at Tinker for larger aircraft.

The facility was designed with near-laminar ventilation systems, which allow for hazardous de-painting operations to occur within OSHA and EPA guidelines. The design provides supporting systems, including telescoping man-lift platforms, particulate control and ventilation, breathing air, compressed air, process water, electrical for dusty environments, and high-pressure hot washers.
