Northrop Grumman Manned Aircraft Design Center of Excellence Awarded LEED Silver Certification

The Austin Company provided planning, architectural design, engineering and construction management/ general contractor services for new program management and engineering facility.

Melbourne, FL, September 28, 2015 – Building 228, a program management and engineering building on Northrop Grumman’s Aircraft Design Center of Excellence campus in Melbourne, Florida, was recently awarded LEED® Silver Certification.

The Austin Company (, an international design and construction firm, served as architect, engineer and construction manager/general contractor for this new 210,000 SF facility for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (

An important consideration in the building’s design and construction was incorporation of environmental and sustainability practices.

"Our newest building, 228, not only provides a safe and healthy workplace for our employees, it was constructed in a manner to minimize adverse impacts on our environment."

The project earned LEED® Credit points across numerous categories, including: alternative transportation – preferred parking for low emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, water-efficient landscaping, water use reduction, optimized energy performance, green power, regionally sourced materials, recycled materials and construction waste management. 

This LEED® certification is in addition to two awards previously presented to Building 228: Design-Build Institute of America Florida Region Merit Award and Engineering News Record Southeast Regional Best Projects Award of Merit.
